Lottery Grant

News from Bill Phillips.

Abergavenny Chess Club have been awarded a lottery grant of about £5,500. It is to develop the sport of chess locally. There are 2 major strands,

Strand 1 is training, this will not only cover local chess players but also any chess playing local children and also under the heading “Training the Trainers” we intend to run local training sessions for parents and teachers that want to learn the rules of chess and learn the rudiments of playing chess to be able to pass onto their children.

Strand 2 is to improve the opportunities to play chess in a more competitive, but friendly, environment. We hope to run 4 junior chess weekends, the first will be in a local venue and will have sections for under 8 year olds, under 10, under 12 and under 14. We will run the tournaments every 6 months and hopefully establish the tournaments for the future by the time our lottery money runs out (we estimate it will cover the expenses for 4 tournaments.

I’ll send you details when we have further news.

Best wishes

Bill Phillips

The club would like to thank the hard work of Bill, David Llewellyn and others in achieving this grant.
